When Should You Go to the Emergency Dentist? A Guide for Families in Brant Region

Not every toothache is an emergency — but some definitely are. Knowing the difference can save you pain, money, and even a tooth.

Here's a quick guide for families in Paris, Ontario and the surrounding area.

Go to the emergency dentist if:

You've knocked out a tooth. Pick it up by the crown (not the root), try to place it back in the socket, and get to us fast. If you can't replant it, keep it in a glass of milk. Time is critical — within 30 minutes gives us the best shot at saving it.

You've cracked or broken a tooth. Even a small crack can expose the nerve inside your tooth. Rinse with warm water, apply a cold compress, and call us. Don't try to tough it out — cracks don't heal on their own and they get worse.

You have severe, persistent pain. If over-the-counter pain meds aren't helping and the pain is throbbing or constant, something's going on. It could be an abscess, a deep cavity, or an infection. Either way, it needs professional attention.

Your face or jaw is swelling. Swelling usually means infection, and infections can spread to dangerous areas if left untreated. Don't wait for a regular appointment — call right away.

You're bleeding and it won't stop. After an extraction or injury, some bleeding is normal. But if it hasn't slowed after 20 minutes of firm pressure with gauze, you need to come in.

You've lost a filling or crown. This leaves the inner tooth exposed to bacteria, temperature, and further damage. It's not a wait-and-see situation.

What's probably NOT an emergency:

A mild toothache that comes and goes, minor sensitivity to hot or cold, or a small chip with no pain. These still need attention — book a regular appointment. But they likely don't need same-day care.
