5 Tips to Prepare Your Child for Their First Dental Visit
Taking your kid to the dentist for the first time can feel like a big deal — especially if you're a little nervous about it yourself. The good news: most kids do great. A little preparation goes a long way.
Here are five tips from our team at Cobblestone Dental Care in Paris, Ontario.
1. Start talking about it early — and keep it positive.
A few days before the appointment, mention it casually. "We're going to visit the dentist on Thursday! They're going to count your teeth." Keep the language simple and upbeat. Avoid words like "hurt," "needle," or "drill" — even in the context of "it won't hurt." Kids latch onto those words.
2. Read a book or watch a video about going to the dentist.
There are tons of kids' books and short videos about dental visits. They help kids understand what's going to happen in a way that feels safe and familiar. It takes the mystery out of it.
3. Don't project your own anxiety.
This one's tough, especially if you've had bad dental experiences. Kids are incredibly perceptive. If you're stressed, they pick up on it. Try to be matter-of-fact. Treat it like a haircut or a doctor's checkup — routine, not a big deal.
4. Bring a comfort item.
A favourite stuffed animal, a blanket, whatever makes them feel secure. Our team is happy to let them hold it during the visit. We've even "examined" a few teddy bears.
5. Plan something fun for after.
Not a bribe — just something to look forward to. A trip to the park, a favourite snack, or picking out a new book. It gives the visit a positive ending and builds a good association.
What happens at the first visit?
At Cobblestone, first visits for kids are short and low-key. We count their teeth, take a quick look at their gums and bite, and maybe polish their teeth if they're up for it. No drills, no needles, no scary sounds. Just a friendly introduction. Most kids leave smiling — and asking when they can come back.
We recommend bringing children in for their first visit around age three. Call us at 519-442-3222 to book your child's first appointment at our Paris, Ontario office.
